Why do we Learn Science?

We learn science to gain knowledge about the world around us. If we know more about what we are dealing about in life, we can deal with these things better than if we were uninformed. For example a scientist can figure out what an unknown substance is by observing it. For him to know if this substance is safe or not he must have good knowledge of how substances react under certain cicumstances. This also applies to all fields of science, doctors must know the human body to do their job properly engineers also must know their field of science. without knowledge of science we couldn't make advanncements because we wouldn't know about our world, how it would react, and what can be done with that reaction.

Dude I can see exactly see where your coming from with my dad having his hip replaced, there have been so many advancements in technology that my dad went to a doctor 12 years ago and they said that, he shouldn't have the surgery done, because they are working on new ways to do the surgery. And low and behold my dad went in and they have invented a new way of doing the surgery where the recovery time is split in half.

I think you all have some good insights but again, why should we ALL learn science? why can't just a couple of you specialize and share your knowledge with the rest of us?

Because, if only a few people had any knowledge about science, things could go really wrong. They could use it in an immoral way and no one would know what they were doing. (unauthorized experiments on people, releasing drugs that have horrible side effects..)That would also contribute to Mr. V's beef about people blindly accepting authority because no one would be able to contridict them. Generally, massive ignorance is a bad thing. Corrupt governments (or scientists) can rise to power, stay in power, or do awful things and the people don't know that anything is wrong.

so maybe you should include why we need science and what benefits it has when people know it.
my opinion is that in the future you never know what you might do or what might happen so we might as well learn all we can now to prepare for better and a wider amount of options and posibilties we can have.
